How ACA subsidies work
The Affordable Care Act caps what you pay for a benchmark “silver” health plan at a percentage of your income — the lower your income, the smaller that percentage. The government pays the rest as a premium tax credit (subsidy) directly to your insurer, lowering your monthly bill.
Three things drive your subsidy: your household income as a share of the federal poverty level, your household size, and your age (older applicants have higher benchmark premiums, so they often receive larger credits).
One important 2026 change: the enhanced pandemic-era subsidies that removed the income cap have expired unless renewed, so higher earners may see the “400% cliff” return. That makes it more valuable than ever to compare plans with a licensed agent who can find the best value for your situation.

Frequently asked questions
How much can I save with an ACA subsidy?
It depends on your household income relative to the federal poverty level, your household size, and your age. Lower incomes get larger premium tax credits. Use the calculator above to estimate your monthly savings, then talk to a licensed agent for your exact plans and price.
Who qualifies for a health insurance subsidy in 2026?
Generally, households earning between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level can qualify for a premium tax credit on Marketplace plans. Below that range you may qualify for Medicaid in expansion states; above it, the enhanced pandemic-era subsidies have expired for 2026 unless renewed, so the 400% cliff may apply.
What is the 400% subsidy cliff?
Before 2021, anyone earning over 400% of the poverty level got no premium tax credit at all — a sharp 'cliff.' Temporary pandemic-era rules removed it, but those enhancements expired at the end of 2025, so for 2026 the cliff is back unless Congress renews them. Even above the cliff, an agent can find your best-value plan.

No. It's an estimate for illustration only, based on the standard ACA formula and rough national benchmark premiums. Your real subsidy and premium depend on your ZIP code, the specific plans in your area, and current law. Talk to a licensed agent or visit HealthCare.gov for exact figures.
